Causes of Varicose Veins

Varicose Veins: - a common venous circulation Problem

The condition is usually the result of problems with valves within the veins of the leg. When one or more of the valves fails to close properly, the veins conduct blood back into the leg instead of up to the heart. As blood accumulates, abnormal pressures dilate the superficial veins, causing the veins to bulge and become visible

Causes of Varicose Veins:
1. Commonly hereditary and occurs more commonly in women than men.
2.   Varicose veins are more frequent in today's society as more people have sitting jobs with almost nil walking, thus resulting in insufficient pumping of the veins by leg muscles.
3.    Lack of exercise, restrictive clothing, and weight gain can add to the strain on the veins.

Varicose Veins during Pregnancy:
It is common for women to develop varicose veins during their pregnancy. The main cause of this is due to the hormone changes in the woman's body. There are increased levels of progesterone which cause the blood vessels to relax. This problem is further increased by the enlarged womb compressing the major veins that pass through the pelvis which results in pressure in the veins of the legs. Varicose veins may disappear after pregnancy however after each subsequent pregnancy varicose veins are more likely to appear and become more visible.

Varicose Vein in Pregnancy & latest treatment options without surgery

Varicose Veins Treatment

Depending on the severity of the condition, initial treatment is usually a compression stocking worn when the patient is standing or walking. The stocking may relieve the symptoms and delay the progression of the condition somewhat, but does not cure the underlying problem. The definitive treatment is to stop the flow of blood back into the legs by surgically destroying the incompetent varicose vein.

While patients often try to ignore varicose veins, treatment is important to prevent visible dilated, twisted veins, aching pain, and nonhealing type of ulcers on the surface of the skin. Early treatment is highly recommended to help prevent the varicose veins from becoming very advanced.

Treatments options for varicose veins:
§ Advanced Radiofrequency ablation Procedure
§  Laser for varicose Vein Treatment
§  Surgery for Varicose Vein
§  Sclerotherapy

Varicose Vein Stripping Surgery

Vein stripping is surgery to remove varicose veins in the legs.
Vein stripping is usually done when a large vein in the leg like superficial saphenous vein is thick and rope-like. Vein stripping usually takes about 1 to 2 ½ hours. Most people receive either general or spinal anesthesia. Two or three surgical cuts are made by the surgeon in the leg.
The surgeon will thread a thin, plastic wire into the vein through groin and guide the wire through the vein toward the other cut. The wire is then tied to the vein and pulled out, which pulls the vein out with it. Same procedure is done for other damaged veins also.
Now a day’s fewer vein stripping surgeries are done because there are newer and better non-surgical ways to treat varicose veins. These other treatments are less painful and have a much faster recovery time.

Symptoms Of Varicose Veins

Varicose veins can cause no symptoms at all and will merely be a nuisance because of their unpleasant appearance.  However, varicose veins can cause heaviness or tension in the legs.  There is often a feeling of swelling, aching, restless legs, cramps and itching.  Symptoms are often worse after a long day of standing. Varicose veins can sometimes cause more serious problems such as:
Superficial thrombophlebitis - The superficial varicose veins become red, hot, tender and painful and blood clots form in the superficial veins.  This can take many weeks to resolve.
Chronic venous insufficiency - the development of brown discoloration of the skin at the ankle (pigmentation), thickening in the tissues around varicose veins (liposclerosis) are signs that more extensive tissue damage is occurring.
Varicose ulceration - if the tissue damage becomes great enough, venous ulcers can develop in the skin just above the ankle. .
Bleeding - It tends to be from smaller very superficial venous blebs in the skin.

How Can Varicose Veins Be Prevented?

Forming of varicose vein is difficult or impossible to prevent. But you can prevent varicose vein getting worse. Person can take more precaution to delay of forming other branches of veins.
  •  Avoid long and continuous standing or sitting better to take break, crossing your leg also not good. Elevate the legs during sitting and while sleeping. The leg raise during sleeping should be about 15-25 degree means legs above the heart.
  • To improve muscular tone patients require light physical activities which helps blood flow towards the heart from varicose vein.
  • Those are overweight or suffering from obesity, lose weight. This will improve venous blood flow through varicose veins.
  • Tight clothes and low jeans around your waist are not really good because this prevents the venous return towards the heart. Tight clothes can cause varicose veins more worse.
  • Avoid wearing high heels for long periods. Lower heeled shoes can help tone your calf muscles. Toned muscles help blood move through the veins.
  • Wear compression stockings if your doctor advises you to. These stockings create gentle pressure up the leg. This pressure keeps blood from pooling in the veins and decreases swelling in the legs.

Treatment Options for Varicose Veins

What treatment options are available for varicose veins?
To a large extent the treatment will depend on the site of the major valve problems in the varicose veins, the distribution and tortuosity of the veins and the severity of the varicose veins.
Surgery - this is still the most common form of treatment for varicose veins because not much information is available for non-surgical treatment to general public. But besides increased morbidity, recurrence is common as compared to non surgical treatment. EVLT (Endovenous Laser Therapy) - this is a method of treating the larger varicose veins in the groin or behind the knee. But frequently does not deal with small varicose veins.  Injection sclerotherapy - this is used in all types of varicose veins and a microinjection technique may be used for thread veins. It does not seem as effective Compression stockings - these may be all that is required if aching & swelling is the main problems. It is essential that the correct grade of stocking is used after proper fitting.

  • Regular leg exercise to improve your leg strength, circulation, and veins such as walking or running.
  • Weight control to avoid placing too much pressure on your legs.
  • Don’t cross your legs for long times when sitting.
  • Elevate your legs when resting as much as possible, either while sitting or lying down.
  • Don’t stand or sit for long periods of time. If you have to then shift your weight from one leg to the other every few minutes. While sitting for a long periods of time, stand up and move around or take a short walk every 30 minutes.
